A Stitch in Time
In the series “A Stitch in Time” I create photo based images about my everyday environment. I take digital photographs while on my daily travels through the New York City boroughs, then heat transfer them onto canvas and sew them together using common sewing materials.
This process allows me to record the world before me and to also infuse my experience of it into the image. One way of doing this is by sewing found objects from the scene such as a piece of a crushed car, into the image, thereby creating a kind of “time capsule”. I am interested in the history of image-making and how technologies and techniques change and evolve over time. In my work, I use both the age-old method of sewing with new-age digital technology.
My printing process includes ripping and tearing the cloth and then mending it back together. This is both an attack on, and a reconstitution with, the surface. By using my hands to create an image which I see as totally unique, I am questioning and playing with this infinitely reproducible digital age I live in. I also outline details that catch my interest in the photograph by using my sewing machine and thread. My construction of images is a way of coming to terms with the world I see around me.
